Artist Statement
“In my recent paintings, I’ve sought to capture the things that excite me visually in a more realistic and textural way, while still holding onto the simple geometric forms and calming colour palettes of my earlier abstract works. I was first drawn to swimming pools with their hard, defined edges contrasted against the fluid sparkle of blue water. The clean simple lines of pavers, the play of shadows on solid concrete walls, and the soft distortion of black lines beneath the surface all fascinated me. I wanted to capture that moment of standing at the pool’s edge, gazing down into the cool blue depths before diving in.
From backyard pools and ocean baths, I was inspired to paint the solid edges of other things: a lighthouse watching the horizon, weathered billboards, and buildings outlined against pale blue open skies. The three sculptures continue the swimming pool theme, each inspired by the simple geometric shape of the classic kidney-shaped pool.”
